Overview
The Tacoma Dome Link Extension will add nearly 10 miles of mostly elevated light rail tracks between Federal Way and Tacoma. This project includes four new light rail stations in the South Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma/Portland Avenue and Tacoma Dome areas.
These stations will connect to regional transit services like Pierce Transit, Intercity Transit, and others.
Stations will feature pickup and drop-off zones for riders. They will provide convenient access for pedestrians, cyclists, and riders arriving on paratransit. The future South Federal Way and Fife stations will each have approximately 500 parking spaces.
Benefits of the TDLE
When Tacoma Dome Link starts, it will offer fast and frequent travel to destinations across the region, including:
- Federal Way Transit Center to Tacoma Dome Station in 20 minutes
- Fife to Tacoma Dome Station in 6 minutes
- Tacoma Dome Station to Sea-Tac Airport in 35 minutes
Current project status
The Tacoma Dome Link Extension (TDLE) project is currently in the environmental review phase. From December 2024 to February 2025, Sound Transit collected public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). A Draft EIS analyzes and documents a project’s potential impacts to the natural and built environment, and it proposes ways to mitigate unavoidable impacts.
In June 2025, the Sound Transit Board identified a preferred alternative for the Tacoma Dome Link Extension (TDLE). A preferred alternative is a statement of where the agency is leaning based on information available at the time. It is not a final decision. The Board considered the findings from the Draft EIS, public comments, additional analysis, Sound Transit’s Equitable Engagement Tool, and staff recommendations in its decision. The Preferred Alternative includes:
- The SF 99-West alignment with a design refinement to transition the alignment to the east side of SR 99 near the King/Pierce County line and the SF 99-352nd Station.
- The Fife I-5 alignment with Fife Station.
- The Close to Sounder alignment with the Portland Avenue Station and Close to Sounder Station.
Sound Transit is continuing to advance project design and fieldwork in preparation for the Final EIS, expected no earlier than 2027. The Final EIS will include analysis on the Preferred Alternative and other alternatives, and it will include responses to comments on the Draft EIS. Sound Transit continues to work with Tribal Nations, local jurisdictions, property owners, and community members along the project corridor.
