Behind the immensely collaborative group I Don’t Speak French, is multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, Håkan Persson, who we had a chance to catch up with following the release of their newest single “Blow the Speakers Up”. The ever-evolving indie-rock has seen their music featured in several MTV shows, and most recently had their single “Blow the Speakers Up” accompany the worldwide release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20. If you’ve watched any TV recently, chances are you’ve heard I Don’t Speak French.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
IDSF: I would say it’s hook-driven, psychedelic indie rock inspired by a rainbow of genres.
What’s the story behind your name?
IDSF: The name comes from one of the first songs we wrote, not knowing then what the band was. The song was called “Hopeless romantic” and contained the lyrics “I don’t speak French, or Italian baby”
What was it like to see your music used by a major brand, like Samsung, in a commercial?
IDSF: It was, and is mind blowing in so many ways. Our friends and families keep texting and calling us saying they hear the song all the time. It’s such a privilege to be able to get your music heard by so many people all over the world. I remember crying when I got the call from our publisher because it meant so much.

What has led you to work so collaboratively in your music?
IDSF: I always thought music should be shared, some of the greatest ideas are made from collaboration. It’s a way of getting inspired and exposing yourself to ideas you otherwise wouldn’t have. I’ve always said that if I succeed I would like to be able to bring as many people as possible along for the ride. Joy is best shared.
As a writer, producer and performer, do you have a favorite part of the process in creating your music?
IDSF: Well I enjoy all the parts, usually they are in some way intertwined. But I do love producing and coming up with new sounds and ideas. I love experimenting with different gear, microphones and bringing different people and musicians in the mix.
Do you have a place or time that you feel you make your best work?
IDSF: One of my favorite moments is when you wake up early, sit down in just your underwear with a cup of coffee and just get stuck making music. You lose yourself for hours, not even able to get dressed and walk to the studio for a proper recording.
How do you see I Don’t Speak French evolving in the future?
IDSF: I see us doing singles, EP’s and albums, hopefully filled to the brim with amazing collaborations and experimentation. I think with how I see “I don’t speak french”, it’s always going to be an evolving thing (sound wise).
Any songs or artists you’ve been digging lately?
IDSF: Yes! I’m just crazy about Oliver Tree, I think it’s one of the best things in decades. We also just love Coast Modern, during our trip to California last year they were our soundtrack for the entire trip.
